The Shalom Foundation is organizing the 7th edition of the Festival of Jewish Culture “Warsaw of Singer”, which will take place in Warsaw from 28/08 to 05/09/2010. Numerous artists and stars will participate in this event, among others: Nigel Kennedy (England) with the band KROKE, Giora Feidman and the Gershwin Quartet (Israel/US), Yale Strom, Theresa Tova (Canada), Elisabeth Schwartz, Matt Herskowitz (Canada), Sanya Kroitor (Israel), (US), Raphael Goldwaser (France), Mendy Cahan (Israel), Raphael Rogiński (Poland).
This year’s edition of the festival promises to be extremely interesting. The public will be able to applaud stars of international renown – there is no doubt that Nigel Kennedy is one of them. Last year over 4 thousand people came to listen to the English virtuoso. Not everyone had the opportunity to enter the All Saints’ Church and participate in his concert. Nigel then played a short piece for them in front of the church. It is especially for these people that Kennedy will play this year, accompanied by the excellent band KROKE.
The performance of Giora Feidman, an extraordinary Argentinian clarinetist and saxophonist will be another important artistic event of this year’s edition. This talented musician – a true legend of the klezmer scene – enriches his compositions with classical beauty and modern rhythms, which will certainly win the hearts of the Festival audience.
The concert of the world renowned violinist Yale Strom, splendidly combining klezmer avant-garde with jazz, will certainly provide the public with exceptional, spiritual sensations. He will be accompanied by his wife, Elisabeth Schwartz, who is going to enrich this energetic repertoire singing in Yiddish. on that evening, we will turn our thoughts to the unique atmosphere of lively inns and joyful weddings that were once an inherent part of the Jewish world.
This year’s edition, just like the previous ones, will present some unique and innovative artistic projects. The most important is “Geniza ziemia, powietrze, ogień” (“Genizah earth, air, fire”) – an installation consisting of music and word, with the participation of the talented guitarist and composer Raphael Rogiński, accompanied by poets: Dariusz Pado and Radosław Wi¶niewski. Rogiński is also going to present his own project, in which some of the best bands and the most outstanding musicians of the avant-garde scene will participate: Mitch and Mitch and Kruzenstern – Cukunft, Oy Division, Paweł Szamburski, Mikołaj Trzaska, Eyal Talmudi and Igor Krutugolov.
The program of the “Warsaw of Singer” festival offers numerous events for everyone fascinated by literature. one of the most interesting events of this type will be a meeting with representatives of the generation of the seventies. In this debate, moderated by the highly regarded poet and literary critic Joanna Wajs, will take part the winner of the “Polityka” Passport for 2009 Piotr Paziński and Radosław Kobierski.
Another interesting event, with the participation of Piotr Matywiecki and Michał Głowiński, will be a debate devoted to the possibility of developing a language that would enable us to talk about the blurred image of Jewish culture in Polish literature
During the festival, all participants will be able to learn about the rich and interesting Jewish culture through different means of expression: theatre, film, dance, literary debates, Yiddish language, visual arts, music and exhibitions presenting works of the most talented and outstanding artists from Poland and from around the world.
Let's meet in Singer's Warsaw!
